This is a new blog I have started to see if we have anyone out there interested in talking. Let's start a discussion about the FHSAA Rules Exam, how has everybody been doing on it?
1 out away from a 10 run rule and the home team scores, gotta go the full 7. Ugh, who hasn't been there huh? Hope everyone is having a good season, start the talk folks. Anything interesting going on? Ejections, games, etc. Had 1-0 ball game last Friday, 1hr. 35 mins. SWEEET!
First year with ECUA. My umpiring skills have improved tremendously as a result of the meetings, field clinics but mostly getting out there and learning from my mistakes and observing the good habits of others. it just started to click instinctively without having to think about it. So much more to improve on, especially consistency in the high end of the strike zone.
Thanks for speaking up. I wish more would use the site as a clearing house for questions, situations, comments, how they handled situations, etc. It CAN be a great resource for information and learning. Keep up the good work.
District Championship game. Umpires calling several illegal pitches. Which are correct illegal pitches. Catcher of that team is up to bat, hit a roller to the first baseman that steps on the inside of the bag to get the runner out. Runner come by and throws an elbow and hits the firstman in the shoulder. Grounds for an ejections or not??
Throwing an elbow may be deemed unsportsmanlike rather than malicious contact, umpire judgment. Either one can result in an ejection. If the throwing of the elbow is deemed minor in nature then a warning may be suitable.
To clarify further: if throwing the elbow is deemed malicious then must eject. If it is deemed unsportsmanlike and minor in nature, then a warning may be given and no ejection.
hi new to the local group but have over 10 years doing HS baseball in Broward Cty. have been out of it now for over 8 years. will accept any help and or comments from you, "been there for a while" guys thanks.
Hey all, Fall season is about to begin. New members are probably already inflight to middle school training. Good luck and wish you the best. Looking forward to seeing you all for the Spring season and getting the chance to work with some newwww blood. Have a good fall.
Does anybody know what the Little League Softball rule is for interference by a retired batter-runner at 1st base, continuing to 2nd base to draw a throw and allowing a runner from 3rd to score.
Good question. Why would [are] you calling it interference? Just because the runner continued to 2nd purposely to draw a throw while runner went home? Was there something else that happened to cause "interference"? I would think as in baseball, if this is truly interference, it would be a dead ball and all runners return to the base occupied at the time of interference.
Runner on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Runner on 1st takes off on the pitch and the batter hits a line drive to the outfield. It is caught and the runner on 3rd tags. The outfielder fires the ball to 1st base to get the runner who left early. The outfielder succeeds after the run scores. Does the run count???

GREAT QUESTION! Rule 8.1.1e ...The coach or captain of the team at bat, AFTER BEING INFORMED BY THE UIC...
What does 'being informed by the UIC' mean? If the UIC calls & signals obstruction and then obstruction rule is enforced (the obstruction may be ignored) the team has been 'informed' and at that time they can elect to decline the penalty and instead accept the resulting play. It is the responsibility of the team to know the rule.
The rule for LL baseball/softball for a batter-runner for continunig to 2nd and drawing a throw after being put out is. LL rule book 7.09 E. It is interference by a batter or runner when-7.09E.. Any batter or runner who has just been put out hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of a teammate.
When a courtesy runner(sub)comes in to run, is he all done for that half inning, or is he eligible for entry as pinch hitter or fielder after said half inning????
Speed-Up Rules Courtesy runners allowed for pitcher and catcher at any time. Must be a player that has not been in the game. May not use the same player for both positions. A player that is used as a courtesy runner may not pinch hit or pinch run in the half inning he is used as courtesy runner. A violation of this rule is considered an illegal substitute. PENALTY: For illegal substitute – out and restricted to the bench. If he re-enters again after being restricted to the bench, he is out and EJECTED.
Question regarding the pitcher. How strict are we as far as the pitcher about the warmup pitches. After the fist inning of course he has five warmup pitches and/or 1 minute, or one of the other.
Whether 5 or 8 throws, must be completed within 1 minute (timed from 1st throw for starting pitchers and timed from 3rd out of previous 1/2 inning for subsequent innnings). Ump can allow more throws if injury or bad whether. Following this rule will help keep the 'flow' of the game; one factor in game management. Talk with your catchers at the start of the game as to what you expect. They shouldn't have to be reminded but when there is 1 or 2 pitches left, let the on-deck hitter know - this will also alert others on the field. BE FLEXIBLE if needed. Example: Catcher comes out immediately but something happens to strap on mask or chest protecter. He either fixes or another is brought out and he has to adjust... someone is alerted to come warm up pitcher, you leave 2 pitches left for the catcher (the pitcher will usually throw to other fielders at this point to keep warm...that's ok). Time elapses. Let the pitcher finish the 2 throws anyway.
Just completed 1st year. Many thanks to trainers, evaluators & great partners for all the help. This has been an awful lot of fun and can hardly wait for the spring season to begin!
This is a discussion group for the members of East Coast Umpires Association, users of our Umpires Association, and umpires from far and wide who wish to contribute to the discussions taking place here.
